If you are someone new in vermicomposting, here are some quick facts that may help you on your newly discovered adventure. These facts will give you an idea on what you are supposed to expect and do as you go along. Make sure you understand these because these information will lead you to your success.

First, vermicomposting is also called worm composting. This is a process which breaks down organic materials into a nutrient-rich and dark substance that are useful for the plants. This is done with the help of composting worms.

The most commonly used and recommended composting worms are the Red Wiggler worms or Eisenia Fetida. These are also known as red worms, manure worm and tiger worm. The earthworms that you can see in your backyards are not good for vermicomposting because they may die once situated inside the house. Red Wiggler worms on the other hand are surface dwellers and can dig up to 2 inches allowing aeration and a more loosened soil. They are also heavy eaters of organic materials and can eat as much as their body weight making them suitable for the process.

Next, vermicomposting is not a rigorous process but it requires attention. The bin should always be situated in a cool temperature. Too much heat and cold may eventually lead to the death of the worms. It is also important that beddings are always moist but not too wet and soggy.

In the meantime, vermicomposting gives good results.  Its by product which is called compost or vermicompost is best for the plants.  The worm castings are used as fertilizers for the garden.  It can also be used to make compost tea which can be sprayed in your crops.  These products will help in improving the soil structure.  The water and nutrient holding capacity of the soil will be improved while threat to leaching can also be avoided.

The best thing about vermicomposting is that it is eco friendly.  Instead of throwing your kitchen scraps in the garbage, you can already help in reducing the waste by doing this.  At the end of the day, vermicomposting can be your plants and the environment’s best friend.
